Week 4 – FMP

Project Proposal – on the blog (Project Proposal Category)

30/03/2021

In this lesson, we explored different ideas and ways to present our suggestions. First column; inspired by artist research – I sketched out a few ideas relating to the work of Barbra Kruger. Using imagery and bold statements and typeface. Sketching out photography ideas influencing from Tom Hegens and Jarren Vink’s images. Looking at a range of layouts to present the photographs. On the third image across, I explored the work of Jarren Vink further – identifying still life objects with hard light photography. Highlighting the substances details, creases, shadows and layers. On the second column, we had to sketch out five ideas relating to subject research. For this section, I mainly used it to promote recycling and to display shocking statistics about plastic pollution found from secondary research – encouraging the audience to limit their plastic intake or to use alternatives. On the third column down; we had to explore ideas inspired by primary and secondary imagery. I sketched out images influenced by the primary images I took for our photography lesson (taking images in Kendal) and created collages with the imagery – experimenting with repetitive use and layering pictures. Also, producing collages and photography ideas from pictures I found on Google and Pinterest that interest and influence me.

Understanding Assessment Criteria

31/03/2021

The requirements of a set brief;

  • Content – reviewing the project proposal.
  • Planning & Production – gathering a range of different ideas and a plan, mind maps, initial planning and chosen workshops/visits.
  • Research – looking at existing substances, subjects that relate to the topic. Primary (drawings, own images, interviews) and secondary (magazines, book, online, videos/documentaries) research.
  • Practical Skills – everything you produce, create – digital graphic, image taken, drawing.
  • Problem Solving – overcoming any difficulties to make improvements/adjustments. Practical (how to use something) and creative (what does it show/communicate).
  • Samples & Outcomes – how you communicate your creative ideas, visually through the things you produce.
  • Presentation – displaying any final and last outcome pieces and developed work. Can be presented in galleries, portfolio or sketchbook.
  • Evaluation & Reflection – evaluate the success, setbacks, downfalls. How you it be improved, reflect from your work.

Pass, Merit, Distinction Vocabulary-

  • Pass, ‘clearly’ – basic, simple and obvious.
  • Merit, ‘purposefully’ – more evidence, in depth detail and creative thinking.
  • Distinction, ‘imaginatively’ – your own interpretation, showing creativity and extremely detailed.
  • Pass, ‘appropriately’ – manner that is suitable, predictable of what is up to standard and purpose.
  • Merit, ‘extensively’ – covers more requirements, extensive detail with a wider range.
  • Distinction, ‘comprehensively’ – covers all aspects and elements, inferred the brief.
  • Pass, ‘sufficient’ – adequate, enough.
  • Merit, ‘effective’ – intended, successful in providing required outcome.
  • Distinction, ‘thorough’ – great care and in full and detailed depth, covering all aspects and more.

Working Towards a Live Brief

Image from Sketchbook – 31/03/2021

Commercial – focusing on money, buying, selling. Sometimes on a large scale, making or intended to make a profit – dealing with people/customers.

Product – campaign merchandise, subscriptions, kits. For example; Red Nose Day – red noses that all money is made goes to charity and it is a fun way to donate. Tomms; buy a shoe, then the company gives a free pair away to someone in need. This is a way of drawing the audience in to helping out but the company/brand also gets a profit from the purchasing.

Events – rewards, badges, sponsors/adopting, challenges. This is a social way for the audience to interact and to take part of an event – looking at age audience, this stands out to children/younger generation (rewards and badges), a way of receiving something.

Remember – reflect on the values, a message is being delivered, is there something your target audience would want?

Looking at my own topic, Events – there could be sponsored beach cleans or cleaning kits which provide a profit. Marine biologist visits – payed to attend, also making a profit.

Product- plastic pollution merchandise – clothing, key-rings, artwork, etc.

Donate – a way people could reduce plastic, how many plastic materials does your household have? Badges, etc if someones has donated – a way of receiving something when giving, this interests people (especially children and the younger generation).

Collection of secondary source images, newspaper articles and information found; all of these sources were used to produce a collage in my sketchbook to show a wide range of secondary sources – plastic pollution photographs, newspaper headings and articles, cut-out phrases.

Sketchbook Work – 01/04/2021
Sketchbook Work – 01/04/2021

WEEKLY REFLECTIVE

After completing more secondary research, I feel more comfortable and ready to move onto any primary work and samples as I have gather a widen range of images and found multiple facts/information relating to my plastic themed project. To make me feel more prepared, I could design logos or produce slogans (primary sources) so when it comes to any practical work, I am more prepared.

Over Easter, I am going to catch up on blog and sketchbook work and find some more information and images for my book. This week will give me a chance to be up-to-date with any missed or unfinished work.

Over the next few weeks, I am looking forward to producing my own ideas and creating work inspired by any artist work. In the workshop weeks (tutor-led), I will aim to produce a broad collection of samples covering multiple techniques and skills. These workshops will help me lead to what I would like to produce in any final sample weeks. Too elaborate, I am mainly looking forward to digital workshops – expanding my digital skills and techniques and producing more graphic design-like artwork for final samples. Lastly, I am looking forward to workshops such as; plaster casting, dark room photography and repeat pattern – this is because I am new and inexperienced with these techniques so it will be fascinating to see how the process is and how the final outcome appears.

Last week, I set myself a target to produce more practical work and build up my secondary resources. In my opinion, I have successfully met this target as I have learnt more about commercial work an advertisement (secondary work) and collected a range of secondary images and newspaper to produce in a practical workshop. For next week, my target is to start initial ideas and planning. Focusing on time management still, by completing any online or practical work on time.
